Meal Planning - Who Does It?
I used to like cooking. I had kids. I got a job. I got busy.
We live about 30 minutes out of town. We don't do takeout very often. Really, who can afford it?! It's usually cold by the time I get home with the food. And, surprise! 7/10 times the order is screwed up. You can't just run back and get it fixed. If I stopped by the grocery store every day after work, I don't want to be in town until 7pm every night. Let's face it, I'm not organized enough to plan this all out in advance. Honestly, I really don't want to either.
Did someone take meat out of the freezer for supper tonight? Probably not!
Well, what do you want to eat? I don't know. What's easy? I don't want leftovers.
We don't have the ingredients for that. I'd like to eat tonight, that's going to take too long to make. I'm tired, can't you cook? We've had that already this week. KD, corn and elk steak again?! You need to buy ____ next time your at the grocery store. Why didn't you pick up ____? Did you put it on the grocery list?
It's enough to drive me bonkers! An ongoing fight in our house now. I've tried meal planning before but it didn't stick. Having picky kids didn't help matters. I'm going to try it again this week with the help of an app. I sent the kids and hubby a text with the link to the app so they can download it. Shared the log in info so we can all see what's going on. I chose the first week's suppers. The app created me a grocery list. The kids and hubby can add to it.
The first week went surprisingly well! Everyone in the family took a turn cooking, and I believe most of the meals were a hit and we'd make again. My daughter is a picky eater and there were things that she avoided, but at least she tried a taste (my rule). I was so happy that we didn't eat the same ol' fall back meal. And another surprising outcome from this new experiment... my fridge isn't full of leftovers that will be thrown out. Some of the recipes were increased by a little, a starch side was added, due to the fact that I have a teenage boy and a hungry man in the house. I don't have a bunch of wasted food this week in the fridge that will be tossed. Money saved, if you ask me!
Anyone else out there meal plan?! What do you do?
